ABOUT One Great George Street

A magnificent Grade II listed, four-domed, Edwardian building

Located in the centre of Westminster, One Great George Street (OGGS) is a historic Grade II listed building which was constructed over 100 years ago.

Entering the building, you are greeted with the preserved history within the venue. Operating as a conference centre, event and wedding venue, OGGS has 21 function rooms, spanning five floors. The building is also the headquarter for the Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE), where it’s Learning and Exhibition Centre showcases the very best of civil engineering and the built environment.

Wayfinding digital signage project at One Great George Street

THE CLIENT'S BRIEF

OGGS is in the process of modernising different areas around the building. After completing numerous event space upgrades and most recently, a Lower Ground Café refurbishment, OGGS’s next project was to upgrade the signage around the venue. As the venue and ICE is a popular visitor attraction, Runtech was tasked with replacing its current static solution with modern digital signage, wayfinding and room booking solutions.

With multiple function rooms on each of the five floors, the solution needed to be clear for visitors to navigate the venue. The client wanted to access and edit the displayed content easily.

The final solution

Entering the venue, 32” Samsung displays are wall mounted at the entrance, two for digital signage and one for wayfinding. These displays were installed with ONELAN media players with multi-zone content. This enables the displays to show text, images, audio or HTML5 in an unlimited number of zones, creating a high-end digital signage experience.

The ground floor also hosts four function rooms. Runtech installed 50” Allsee freestanding digital posters outside each room. These displays were fitted with ONELAN media players, before being delivered to site.

Outside the remaining floors’ function rooms, the existing displays were replaced with a 21.5” Reserva Edge Capacitive touchscreen display. However, for some of the larger function rooms, Runtech installed two displays either side of the door. Additionally, those same screens were used on the staircase for wayfinding.

The chosen system was integrated with Rendezvous, the venue’s booking system. Using the Reserva RCM application, the client has full control to customise content, colours, background and more. Bookings are then displayed on ONELAN media players, integrated into AllSee kiosks and 21” Reserva panels.

As majority of the signage was wall mounted, a challenge for Runtech was to mask cabling. As the venue is a listed building with beautiful stonework, Runtech wanted to make sure surface cabling was as neat as possible. Photographing the walls in several locations, Runtech send the colours to a specialist company to produce vinyl wrap in a close colour match. The vinyl wrap was applied to thin trunking which then covered the cabling.

Project outcome

Completing this upgrade has completely enhanced the overall look and feel of the venue. With complete access and control, OGGS can create engaging and modern signage around the venue that enhances its visitors’ and guests’ experience.

This project was a collaboration between the client, NFS, OneMedia (ONELAN’s official UK Partner) and Runtech being the central contractor.

WHAT OUR CLIENT THINKS

It was evident from the outset of this project that our chosen partners, Runtech, OneMedia and NFS were the ideal combination to deliver, what was a significantly important project to One Great George Street. From the initial kick-off meeting to the project delivery, collaboration, innovation and joint problem-solving contributed to the success of the project and it was clear that everyone involved fully understood the brief. I was particularly impressed by the willingness of all involved to deliver the very best solutions at every stage and the continuous sharing of ideas and initiatives between the team. Particular note to Chris Liebrand for his Project Leadership, innovative problem solving and desire to get the very best out of everyone.

A note from our Managing director

Working on this project was a highly rewarding experience for us, as we had the opportunity to work with a completely new product.

The planning and design phase was relatively straightforward, and it was made even easier by the strong collaboration between the client, One Media, NFS, and Runtech. Since Runtech has completed numerous projects in this building before, we had a good understanding of the approach that the client needed from us. One small, but enjoyable aspect of the project was creating a vinyl wrap that matched the colour of the stone walls to conceal cabling.

A COMMENT from onemedia

From our first meeting with Runtech, NFS and the team at One Great George Street, it was clear that this high-profile Digital Signage & Wayfinding project required real attention to detail.

The client’s specifications were clear and the collaborative approach from Runtech, NFS and onemedia ensured that these were delivered upon.

In addition to supplying the new ONELAN & Reserva hardware that was installed by Runtech, onemedia’s creative team also created several bespoke layout designs, using the client’s brand guidelines. The solution was tailored to meet their requirements and user interface training was delivered to ensure that the venue’s front of house staff are able to manage the content with genuine ease.
